How to Care for Your Braces While Travelling

2 min read

No one wants their holidays or vacations to be impacted by braces, but if you have alignment issues, it helps to bear with braces for a short while for a lifetime of straight teeth. Nevertheless, traveling with braces requires some care and planning. It is good to consult with your dentist before you start your holiday so that they can provide some extra support.

The biggest mistake people make while on holiday is to skip their dental hygiene routine and become careless. They think it would not hurt to not take care of their teeth for a few days. However, this can set you back and ruin the progress you may have made. Consult with a family dentist in Leesburg before going on vacation.

Tips to care for your braces while traveling

  • Stick to your normal dental hygiene routine.

Just because you are on holiday does not give you an excuse to be careless about your oral hygiene. You should still brush your teeth twice a day, once before going to bed and one time when you wake up in the morning. Make sure to floss before bed and rinse your mouth thoroughly after every meal to get rid of small particles stuck between teeth. Make sure to carry your mouthwash along with you.

  • Be sure to get a check-up before your trip.

Before you catch your flight to Hawaii for a week-long vacation with your friends, make sure to book an appointment with your dentist and check your dental health status. If you have problems with the mouth, you will know about them beforehand and avoid any bad surprises while you are on vacation. Even if you are not experiencing any issues, it is better to allow your dentist to look once.

  • Pack a braces kit.

If you or your child wears braces, it is best to pack a braces kit for your vacation. Pack your braces as well as an extra in case you lose yours while on holiday. Carry any tools that you use to clean your braces. Make sure to carry a small mirror to look at your teeth closely while cleaning them. If you wear Invisalign, be sure to carry a case.

  • Remember to follow your Invisalign rules.

Going on vacation does not give you an excuse to be careless towards your alignment treatment. If you wear Invisalign, remember that you are required to wear it for at least 22 hours of the day. Not wearing your clear aligners for the majority of the day can slow your progress.
